The power of Google SERPs
The power of Google SERPs:
How search affects rankings.
Search is an essential part of our daily life. We use them to find information, buy products, and more. In many ways, the search determines how we shape our everyday lives. Of course, it is therefore also of great interest how the search works and what effects it has.
In this article we would like to deal with the Google SERP’s.
What are the Google SERPs?
The Google Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) are the result pages of the world’s leading search engine. This is the Google search results page that is displayed for every search query. The SERP’s are the result of the search and have a significant influence on what we find on the Internet.
SERP’s are therefore a central part of the Internet and our digital world. They decide what content we see and what we don’t. So the search engines decide what we see and find in the digital world.
Depending on the topic, the SERPs range from a few entries to well over 100 results. The order of the results and the design of the results list can change after each search query.
There are two main reasons why the Google SERPs can change: the order of the results changes, the design of the results list is called up. While the order of the results can be rearranged after each search query, fundamental design changes in Google SERPs are rather rare. Nevertheless, we are constantly working on the look of the results pages – in order to constantly improve the user experience.
The SERP’s are made up of different elements, each of which has its own function. First of all, of course, there’s the search query itself, which is in the top-left corner. Next to it is the Google logo and a field in which you can enter further search queries. On the right is the advertising panel where companies can place their ads.
But not only the search results themselves are important, but also their order on the SERP’s page. Because of course this order decides which search result the user sees first and where he can start his search for information. The order of the search results is therefore decisive for the information behavior of the users and thus also for their decision-making.
But how does this order of search results come about in the first place? This is of course the secret of Google and the algorithm behind the search engine. This algorithm analyzes each search query and then searches the web for the most relevant results. It takes various criteria into account, such as keywords or backlinks.
Based on this analysis, the algorithm then decides which results best match the search query and sorts them accordingly. Of course, these criteria change over time as Google is constantly evolving and improving its algorithm.
There are regular Google updates that introduce new criteria or change existing criteria. Of course, this also changes the rankings of the individual websites and thus their visibility in the search results. Depending on what changes Google makes, this can either be positive or negative for a website.
Differences between desktop SERP’s and mobile SERP’s
Search results on a desktop computer are very different from those on a mobile phone. Most users these days search for information on their mobile phone, which means search engines adjust their results accordingly. A desktop will typically show 10 results, while a mobile will only show 5 results. This is because mobile device screens are much smaller and it is more difficult to display more than 5 results at once.
Also, when you search on a mobile phone, you often get different results than on a desktop. This is because Google knows which results are most relevant to mobile users. For example, a search for nearby restaurants will automatically display the Local Searches category.
The desktop SERP’s is the search engine results page viewed on a computer and the mobile SERP’s is the search engine results page viewed on a mobile device. The two forms of representation have been quite different in recent years. But at the moment the differences are very small.
It is important for businesses to understand how these two SERP’s differ as it may require adjusting the website and ranking to reflect these differences. The differences are in the favicons and the title link. The title link is single line in the desktop version while that is double line in the mobile version.
What are favicons?
The term favicon comes from English and is made up of the two words “favorite” and “icon”. The favicon will appear next to the URL in search results. Typically, this is a small image displayed on the website. Its main purpose is to recognize the website faster and make it easier to find it from the search box.
Many users bookmark the address of their favorite website. Even if the favicon has only a small function on the website, it can be worth investing some time and effort in here. Because an appealing or meaningful favicon can attract new users to the site and attract more attention when surfing.
The influence on the Google ranking
The visual adjustments that Google has made in recent years have always had an indirect impact on the ranking. Because if websites and brands are easier to recognize and have a high click-through rate, this gradually leads to better rankings. Those who lose out on such adjustments are mostly unknown brands or websites with bad favicon – since their lower click-through rate leads to ranking losses. So if you want your website to rank well, you should start with a good design and a clear favicon.
